What type of person takes these classes? Do I need to have any background in the performing arts?
People from any walk of life, occupation or upbringing compose our student body. We welcome all those who have an interest in writing or performing comedy either to pursue a serious career in the arts or just want a unique hobby and learning experience. Our beginner courses are designed for people with no prior background and are regularly attended by doctors, teachers, plumbers, housewives, businessmen, college students and a plethora of various lifestyles.
Do you offer anything more for someone already with some basic performing and writing experience?
Absolutely. Our advanced classes are geared for individuals looking to expand past an introductory level and learn more complex techniques prevalent for professional quality work in the comedy field. Taught by working full-time performer/writers, you will get the most relevant education and insight available from a experienced practical viewpoint.
Where are the class sessions held every week?
All of our courses are taught at the Comedy Caravan located in the Mid-City Mall, 1250 Bardstown Road in Louisville, KY Occasionally some one-day workshops are held at various other locations and will be marked accordingly. For those interested students who are not local to the Louisville area, we do also offer online workshops and seminars from time to time.
How can I go about registering and paying for an upcoming course?
The best payment method is with a credit/debit card through our website, yet we do accept cash and checks by visiting the Comedy Caravan office during day business hours 12pm-7pm. Our classes typically sell out, so advance purchase is required for enrollment – you will receive a receipt via e-mail immediately as well as a class schedule reminder approximately one week prior to the start date.
Are there any materials I need to purchase for the classes? What should I bring to the first session?
The only items that are neccessary for most classes is a pen and paper for writing activities. Additional books, CDs or DVDs may be recommended by the instructor for extracurricular use, but are completely optional and are not a required purchase.
I’ve seen courses like this in other cities offered for $400+. Why are yours so much cheaper?
The instructors here truly have a love for teaching and believe the creative arts can be valuable for any member of our society. Our courses are on par with the quality of those offered in New York or Los Angeles and providing the community of Louisville with similar resources at an affordable rate is our priority.
What exactly is a graduation show? Will I be performing on stage at the end of the course?
Following each course, typically on the following Tuesday night, students will be able to show off their newly acquired skills on the main stage of the Comedy Caravan. Either with individual stand-up acts, improv games or sketches (depending on the course), this is a great opportunity to invite friends, family and co-workers out to see you perform – and be the envy of all! All students will also receive a DVD of their performance free of charge.
Do you offer private workshops for church socials, school functions, group events, youth camps, etc.?
Absolutely! We have several 1-2 hour improv workshops geared specifically for private groups that include many easy-to-play theatre games for all ages. A great mixer for social events or fun instruction for summer camps and youth groups!
